Selection Policy
Selection criteria is used to determined what materials are needed to support the curriculum and diverse instructional needs of students. Your librarian makes sure that the collection will support all informational and literacy needs.
Picture Books and Intermediate Fiction Books
Do the characters reflect diverse cultures?
Do the picture books represent a variety of genres?
Are the books written by varied and favorite authors?
Are the illustrations engaging?
What are the needs of the library collection?
Have the books been positively reviewed ?
Nonfiction Books
Is the information accurate, objective and up-to-date ?
Do the books:
· present information comprehensively?
· foster the inclusion of all voices within a global society (racial, ethnic,
sexual, cultural, disabled, aged, religious, etc.)
· represent a variety of topics?
· reflect diverse cultures?
· support or enhance the approved curriculum.?
· represent contrasting points of view or multiple interpretations of
content?
Do the illustrations support the content and include varied text features?
Media Materials
Do students have equivalent access?
Do the materials meet the approved curriculum?
Do the materials reflect diverse cultures?
All Materials
Do the materials meet the developmental needs of students for whom they are
intended?
Are the materials free of questions or activities that invade personal or
family privacy by requiring students to reveal private, personal or family
information such as parental or personal relationships, political beliefs, and
religious and moral attitudes?
Have the books been positively reviewed ?
